What is this site ?

TweetElect09.eu checks automatically what people say about the European Elections on the micro-blogging service Twitter.

How does it work ?

We check for « tweets » (messages sent on Twitter) that include a « hashtag » related to the European Elections. If we find some, we include those tweets here, in near real-time.

In addition, we check every tweet for political names and party names. We then produce statistics to show the most twitted political figures, most twitted parties, most twitted countries. See below

Want to participate ?

Use the « #eu09 » hashtag specified at the top of this page when tweeting, and your tweet should appear almost instantly.

FRANCE 24 is the first non-stop international news channel that offers a French perspective and sensibility on world events. It broadcasts on a 24/7 basis on three channels, in French, English and Arabic, in Europe, the Near and Middle East, Africa, Asia and the United States. FRANCE 24 can be accessed by cable, satellite, DSL and mobile phone. The website www.france24.com is available in 3 languages (English, French, Arabic).

About the statistics

Twitter does not allow us to directly identify the language in which people « tweet ».

Therefore, we analyse the content by comparing it to candidates names, party names, then automatically classify the tweets accordingly.

People may also use diminutive names, nicknames of first names of the candidates in their tweets. These names may be actual names from candidates in other countries, and the tweets may be classified wrongly in the tweeterer's mind, but logically in the system's perspective.
